From the 13th to the middle of the 18^th century (until abolition of the Pec Patriarchate in 1766), the Pec Patriarchate had been the seat of the Serbian Church and spiritual center of the Serbian people. Since 1346 it had been the seat of the Serbian Patriarchs. For centuries Pec Patriarchate had been the center of Serbian literacy. A lot of well-known medieval literary works had been written there. The 13^th century frescoes on the walls of the churches in Pec represent masterpieces of the world art history. It is listed in UNESCO.’s inventory of cultural heritage.
